How this Work Hours Calculator Works: The Logic Behind the Math

  • 1440-Minute Daily Scale: To prevent errors, the tool calculates everything in minutes (24 hours = 1440 minutes) before converting back to hours.

  • Overnight Shift Logic: If you start at 10 PM and end at 6 AM, the tool recognizes the day change and calculates the 8-hour duration correctly.

  • Decimal Conversion: Payroll systems require decimals. We divide minutes by 60 (e.g., 45 mins / 60 = 0.75) to ensure your money is calculated correctly.

  • Overtime Multipliers:

    • Overtime (1.5x): Rate is multiplied by 1.5.

    • Double Time (2.0x): Rate is multiplied by 2.0.


Practical Examples

Example: Weekly Payroll (Box 3 & 4)

Scenario: You worked 40 regular hours, 5 hours of overtime (1.5x), and received a $50 bonus. Your base rate is $20/hour.

  1. Box 3: You sum your shifts to get 45.00 total hours.

  2. Box 4: You click Copy from Box 3 to put 45.00 in Regular Hours. (Wait! If you want to split them, you would put 40 in Regular and 5 in Overtime).

  3. Calculation:

    • Base Pay: 40 hrs × $20 = $800.00

    • OT Pay: 5 hrs × ($20 × 1.5) = $150.00

    • Bonus: $50.00

  4. The Result: Your total earnings will be $1,000.00.
